Dale Kinsley, Instructor and Coach

“Public education for All is a radical idea whose promise must be renewed with each generation," believes Dale Kinsley. "As school leaders we must open the world of possibilities and opportunities for each student while leveling the playing field for all our children regardless of background or circumstances with engaging and rigorous learning experiences.”

For approximately three years, Dr. Kinsley has been the director of the Washington State Leadership Academy (WSLA). In collaboration with educational leaders across the state, Kinsley helped research, design, implement and evaluate a leadership development and support program for district and building administrators. After two years of operation, the Washington State Leadership Academy has now served 30 district leadership teams in six regions across the state. The program has proven its value and a new cohort of districts in the remaining regions of the state will be starting the program in fall 2010. At the end of June, 2010, Dr. Kinsley stepped down as the director of WSLA, but will serve as an instructor and coach during the 2010–11 school year.

Kinsley retired from his position of superintendent of Bellingham Public Schools in June 2007, after serving in that role for 16 years. With a career in public education that spans over 40 years, Kinsley began as a Peace Corps teacher. He has been a classroom teacher, a faculty member at the University of California in charge of teacher and administrator preparation, and a superintendent of schools in Santa Cruz, CA and Bellingham, WA.

He has served on numerous professional boards at the local, state, and national level, including the Board of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the National Center for Learning and Citizenship, the Washington Association of School Administrators, and the Professional Educators Board for Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University.

He has made numerous presentations at state and national meetings on aspects of school and district leadership necessary to improve student achievement for all students. He was recognized as the Washington State Superintendent of the Year in 2001.

Kinsley received his B.A. from Princeton University and an Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts.
