Tom Murphy serves as a coach for the Washington State Leadership Academy. He began his educational career in 1968 as a high school English teacher and retired in 2010 after spending eleven years as Superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools. During those forty-two years Tom was also a high school Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent.
During his years as Superintendent Tom was active in legislative issues, testifying in front of legislative committees, assisting in drafting legislation, and leading Federal Way to join in the McCleary lawsuit. His firm belief is that the moral obligation of public education is towards ALL students and that ALL really means ALL. He has been recognized for his work by the Washington ASCD and the Washington Vocational Educators.
He has been the president of the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce and the Advancing Leadership Boards of Directors. He was instrumental in converting the local Chamber Education Foundation to a chapter of Community in Schools.
Since his retirement Tom has continued his volunteer ventures by writing for the local island newspaper, serving as vice president of the local hospital foundation board, and serving as an elected fire commissioner.
